Associate of Science Degree in Accounting

Purpose:
This programme is aimed at developing and advancing the knowledge, skill and professional ability of persons currently working in, or desirous of working in the field of accounting. The Associate of Science Degree Accounting is accredited by the University Council of Jamaica (UCJ) and approved by the University of the West Indies for a Normal Matriculation and Advanced Placement into the UWI’s Bachelor of Science Degree Programmes.

Purpose:
Organization: A cadre of confident, qualified, knowledgeable and skilled finance and accounting professionals with the ability to deliver effective performance outcomes.

Individual: Professional empowerment with the internationally recognized qualification, skill and expertise to effectively manage finance and accounting roles in public sector organizations; and the competitive advantage of consideration for appointment and/or promotion, as well the opportunity to pursue a full degree programme in Accounts.

Entry Requirements:
• Five CXC passes at General Proficiency Level Grades 1 – 111 or GCE O’Levels.
Passes in CXC or GCE O’ Level subjects must include English Language and
Mathematics (N.B. Other non-CXC General Proficiency and GCE O’Level
examinations may be considered and accepted)
• Preference is given to applicants who have either completed the MIND Diploma in
Government Accounting, or are currently pursuing the MIND Diploma in
Government Accounting.

• Financial Accounting and Book-keeping processes
• Technology and the Preparation and production of Financial and Management Reports
• Financial reports within the legal and professional framework
• Basic mathematical concepts and techniques employed in business, economics and the Social Sciences
• Business and the environment
• Accounting information for Management Planning and Control
• Contract Law relevant to Accounting and Management
• Theory of Taxation and the attributes of an effective tax system

Target Groups:
• Professionals working in and requiring further development and/or qualification in the field of Finance and Accounts
• All persons desirous of advanced training, development and qualification for employment and/or promotion in the field of Finance and Accounting
